Stainless steel is popular because of its strength, weight, and corrosion resistance. Here are the grades of stainless steel used for storage tanks:

304L and 304 Steel

Grade 304 stainless steel is also called ‘18/8’ in reference to its 18% chromium and 8% nickel content. It is the most common stainless steel grade for industrial tank fabrication. Grade 304 steel tanks are generally used as maturation and pasteurization tanks. Grade 304L is a 304 variant with less carbon, which enhances its rust resistance and makes it ideal for fabricating tanks with many welds.

Food-grade Steel

This grade 304 stainless steel has a clean finish to make it easy to maintain. This makes the tank’s interior resistant to bacteria growth. Food-grade stainless steel is smoothened to get rid of all grooves, pits, and lines. It can also be ground or sanded for a brushed No.4 finish or a finer No.4A finish.

Grade 316 Steel

This stainless steel grade contains chromium and 2-3% molybdenum. The molybdenum makes grade 316 stainless steel resistant to corrosion from various acids used in pharmaceutical and food manufacturing. Grade 316 steel is also renowned for its saltwater resistance. Hence, it is sometimes called marine-grade steel.

The given stainless steel grades are non-reactive. They are recommended for liquids that are non-compatible with carbon steel tanks. Stainless steel storage tanks are inexpensive and thus the best choice for large purchases.
