a man carrying a boxWhile moving to another place promises to be exciting, it can also be quite overwhelming because of all the things you need to do. Packing your belongings, getting the services of a moving van lines company to transport your stuff, and cleaning both houses are just some of them. For some other important things you should do when relocating, read on.

Transfer Your Utilities

If your new home’s rent or homeowners’ association fees don’t cover utilities (electricity, water, gas, etc.), you’ll need to have the services transferred. Ideally, you should inform your service providers at least four weeks before your move. When making the arrangements, two important details to sort out are the utilities’ shut-off (old home) and activation (new home) dates. It’s recommended that utilities be shut off and activated a day or two after and before, respectively, the relocation.

Change Your Address

Another important thing you should do is change or update your address in all your records. For one, you’ll have to notify government agencies like the DMV for your driver’s license and vehicle registration, and the SSA for your benefits. Your bank and insurance company should also be informed of your impending change of address.

Secure Your Documents

Sometimes, a move will make it necessary for you and your family to change jobs, schools, doctors, vets, etc. In such a case, it’d be a good idea for you to secure important documents. From your employer, for example, you can request that a certificate of employment be given to you. If you have children, their transcripts will surely be needed by their new school. Additionally, you should obtain records from your doctor, dentist, and veterinarian.

Yes, relocating can be quite overwhelming, but if you prepare early and take on one task at a time, you’ll most likely find it more exciting.
