Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner said he plans to file a lawsuit against President Barack Obama over alleged abuse of power.
The House will vote next month on legislation authorizing the suit, which takes issue with actions Obama has taken on. Boehner accused Obama of failing to carry out the laws passed by Congress.
“On matters ranging from health care and energy to foreign policy and education, President Obama has repeatedly run an end-around” on the public and Congress, Boehner said in a statement.
He said Obama keeps on “ignoring some statutes completely, selectively enforcing others and at times, creating laws of his own.”
In a memo to Republicans, the speaker said if Obama’s actions left unchecked, it would give him a “king-like authority” at the expense of American voters and Congress.
Boehner did not entertain the question of whether impeachment could result from the lawsuit.
He also declined to be specific about which of Obama’s actions the House will challenge in court.
